A brief introduction to the project

To commemorate the 70th anniversary of the victory over the Second World War, the Memorial Hall for Jewish Refugee in Shanghai has been opened to the public after the establishment.

The Background of The Project.

During the 1930s and the 1940s, the Nazis had been cruelly killing the Jews in Europe,. While Shanghai was still a safe place for the jews, opening its arms to them. From 1933 to 1941, tens of thousands of Jews went to Shanghai for shelters or for the chances to be transferred. In February, 1943, the Japanese invaders established the Hongkou District in Shanghai Hongkou Tilan Bridge as the quarantine zone when around 20 thousand Jewish refugees and the suffering Chinese people were in the same extreme misery, having built a profound friendship.

The Concept of the Design

In terms of the design concept, The Memorial Hall for Jewish Refugee in Shanghai has combined all the exhibitions with the changing of the history. After several months of thorough inquiry, it has been divided into five major theme exhibitions as followed "Fled to Shanghai for Shelters, To Be Set Free, The Years of Being Isolated, The Lovely Neighborhoods, The Coming Peace", presented ingeniously with the designed exhibition space.

The Shining Points of the Design

As for the shining points of the design, the displayed contents in the exhibitions are all fine historic works collected since 2007 by Hongkou District, which includes 170 objects ( the 150 original objects plus 20 copies) and 90 stories that are provided by the Jewish refugees and their descendants. Among the exhibitions, there are the restoration of the life scenes of the Jewish refugee and the maps of quarantine zones displayed for the first time. The new exhibition halls also introduce a modern image equipment which could make the visitors get more direct an access to the data of the oral images and the writing materials from the Jewish refugees.
